There was some delicious food at Selma Cafe when (from left) returning Chefs Dan Vernia and Peter Veach were joined by Oran Hesterman of Fair Food Network, with Wesley Ellison as our expeditor last week. Along with the rest of our awesome volunteers, they brought us Eggs Benedict Stabenow, named after Mrs. Le Grand Benedict, who has been credited for creating the famous dish, and US State Senator Debbie Stabenow, for whom Dan Vernia made his own version of this special breakfast treat. In Chef Dan’s version, the poached egg rests on Cheyenne batter bread topped with Zingerman’s farm cheese and Michigan smoked white fish, served with a side of squash ragout. I know. It was pretty damn terrific.
In addition to props to the chefs and volunteers this week, I also need to shout out some massive thanks to John Roos of Roos Roast Coffee who saved the day at Selma after an epic coffee grinder fail at 5:30 that morning when I attempted to brew the first, and obviously, most important carafe of the day. As I started to grind coffee in our small home grinder, Roos gathered up his resources and brought us over a restaurant grade extra grinder to get us through the morning. Roos made many many people happy that day.
Thanks to everyone who came out to eat some good food, share some laughs, pick up their Sunseed Farm CSA share, and enjoy one of the last warm and sunny Fridays we may have for a while.
I hope you are all enjoying the amazing bounty of autumn in our part of the mitten. It’s been glorious at the farmers markets all over town. And the trees this season-Wow.
Looking forward to seeing you in my kitchen soon,
~Lisa
If Chef Dan Vernia,( who I have heard is an awesome chef,) is also the same Dan Vernia from Rochester, please let him know that he is one of the best backyard quarterbacks in Michigan history.
